Microsoft Corp. may continue to sell its Word program while appealing an unfavorable court ruling in a patent, said the U.S. federal appeals court on Thursday.
In May, a district court in Texas ruled that some versions of Word word processor infringe the patent for a technology company in Canada. The dispute centers on the way that Word 2003 and Word 2007 allow users to adapt the encoding of documents to their needs.
The Texas judge ordered Microsoft to pay i4i company, based in Toronto, $ 290 million and demands that in mid-October to stop selling versions of Word as part of the dispute.
Microsoft, based in Redmond, appealed the decision and present its arguments at a hearing on September 23
