Amazon offered to replace copies removed from the novel 1984

Amazon.com said it will replace digital copies of books that were deleted from the electronic readers of its customers during the summer, while the Internet retailer looks for ways to amend the controversial incident.

In an email sent to affected customers on Thursday, Amazon said it will deliver to the owners of their Kindle eBook reader new copies of the novels of George Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm" at no cost.

Amazon said customers can also turn choose to receive a gift certificate for $ 30 or a check.

The email also contained a copy of the apology that the chief executive of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, conducted in July in which he described the removal of books from the company as "stupid, thoughtless and painfully out of line with our principles."

In July, Amazon acknowledged that deleted e-books Kindle Orwell of an undisclosed number of owners.

Amazon said that erased the books because he learned that an outside company had added the books to Amazon's catalog, but that the company had no permits to sell.

The gesture set off a wave of criticism on the internet and Amazon was sued by a high school student who claimed the firm had deleted your copy of 1984 and the "copious notes" which he had taken from the book.

The email from Amazon on Thursday stated that the company would replace the books deleted along with any notes made by customers.
