Vietnam frees blogger and journalist detained

Authorities in Vietnam was released to a blogger and an Internet journalist more than a week after having been arrested for questioning about their criticism of the management of relations with China by the communist government, said one of them on Sunday.

The police arrested Bui Thanh Hieu, who writes a blog under the name of Buon Nguoi Gio, for questioning on August 27. Pham Doan Trang, a reporter for the popular Internet newspaper VietnamNet, was arrested a day earlier.

"I do not know why I let him go," Hieu said in a telephone interview Sunday. "Perhaps they have realized that my actions were not severe.

He said police told him he had evidence that he violated Article 258 of the country's criminal code, which forbids "abusing freedom and democracy to harm state interests."

Hieu's wife, Lien said the blogger will offer more details of his arrest on his blog.

A friend of Trang said he spoke with the mother of the journalist, who said her daughter had been set free on Sunday afternoon. The friend spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid being persecuted by the authorities.

It was not possible to police statements on the subject.

In all three journalists have been arrested in the last 10 days for questioning about his comments on the internet.

They denounced the government for supporting the construction of a controversial bauxite mine in the country that will be conducted by a Chinese company.
