As more people reveal his whereabouts from social networks, there has been a site for surfers to remember that if everyone disclosed the place where they are or one in which they are not be exposed to a crime.
The site name says it all: "Please Rob Me" .
Released last week, Please Rob Me is exceptionally easy. Almost everything it does is display information posted on Twitter as a service to share location information, Foursquare. Rob Me Please put this information in a long, chronological list, referred to as "empty homes recently.
Please Rob Me integrates its list to take that Twitter offered information freely to many sites to show the stark message that social network. But the same warning could Please Rob Me with data flowing in dozens of places.
People do not care about sharing all sorts of personal details on social networks like Facebook. And now, people turn excited to location-based Web sites, as Foursquare, Gowalla or Loopt, which allow you to use the cell phone to alert friends about where to find someone.
Some people choose to show your location only friends with permission. But many put this specific and updated information on public profiles Twitter, anyone can see.
This phenomenon is what has motivated the creators Rob Please Me, "one of them, Boy Van Amstel 25. In a telephone interview, Van Amstel said the technology has become so easy to use that people share too much information online without even noticing.
Van Amstel and co-founders want people to think twice before risking.
In order to clarify the risks, Please Rob Me page shows the image of a thief. Below, indicates that the site "lists all the empty houses out there."
Actually, shows no empty houses. Not even reveals the homes of the absentees. Instead, the photos are from users of Twitter, user names, how long ago "went home" (which is determined when the information provided Foursquare) and where they went, along with a link to your destination on the Web site of Foursquare.
Propose a national safety net in the U.S. broadband
Federal regulators recommend that Congress enact a program of grants to finance a national wireless broadband that allows police, firefighters and other emergency workers communicate.
The Federal Communications Commission proposed 16,000 to 18,000 million dollars in grants over ten years. Julius Genachowski its director said Thursday that the proposal would form part of the national broadband plan of the agency. That plan, which must submit to Congress next month, will propose the means to carry high-speed connections to the Internet to all Americans.
The proposed public safety network would use the wireless spectrum that was freed when TV broadcasts last year went from analogue to digital.

Toyota case draws attention to electronic systems
Investigations into the origin of the crisis of Toyota have also attracted attention on everything that could go wrong in the electronic systems of vehicles, the increasing number of wires, sensors and chips that have profoundly changed the car in the last decade.
Although not found a track that appears responsible for the problems with Toyotas, start drawing a picture, which shows that the auto industry race to incorporate more technological advances in vehicles has surpassed the control tests quality and regulatory initiatives.
And that is worrying not only for Toyota car owners, but for those who drive any modern vehicle that is essentially a computer on wheels.
Toyota insists that the mail has no bearing on the sudden and accidental acceleration which has resulted in massive retreat from the market, and nobody could prove otherwise.
But several lawyers, regulators, engineers and politicians are not ready to exonerate the electronic systems.
The automotive industry has advanced at a rapid pace since the late 1990s, to replace the cables and other mechanical devices from computers that control the brakes to the pedals and the steering. Industry participants note that electronics have made vehicles safer, with devices such as airbags and antilock brakes. This also would have made the vehicles more efficient in fuel consumption, cleaner and usually more reliable.
But things can go wrong, and diagnosis of problems is complex.
The age of the vehicle may also impact.
"It's like finding a needle in a haystack," said Raj Rajkumar, a professor of electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. "It's very difficult to reproduce this. The problem occurs, you review and not find it. It is normal to attribute something to the driver and let it happen."
That's what Toyota did in the beginning.
The drivers complained that their vehicles sped out of control, even without stepping on the pedal, but the complaints were largely dismissed by Toyota, its dealers and government regulators, who attributed the situation to mechanical problems or that drivers stepped the accelerator by mistake.
Toyota, which until recently had the reputation of a company offering industry-leading products, high quality, began replacing other electrical mechanical accelerators in 2002, with the Camry. Since 2007, all models have been equipped with high-tech pedal.
An analysis of complaints by the auto safety research firm Quality Control Systems (NHTSA, for its acronym in English), found that the number of speed complaints received by the Security Agency Highway Traffic tripled from the launch of electronic pedals.
The NHTSE said that 34 people have died in collisions resulting from the sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles since 2000.
But the matter did not receive much attention until a Toyota official of the California Highway Patrol and three relatives were killed when their leased Lexus sped out of control and crashed into another vehicle near San Diego. The shock of August 28 received coverage in the press.

3D movies may cause headaches and other diseases
It is true that the current feeling great science fiction 'Avatar' is breaking every record that put him ahead. But the striking element of 3D in this film (and others) can cause very undesirable side effects.
Many viewers complained that 'Avatar' and other films in 3D format they have caused headaches, nausea, blurred vision and other symptoms of eye diseases, reports the New York Times.
Studies by experts indicate that the problem would be that the effort generated by the eye is not normal, because that would make eye movements to capture the feeling of three dimensions on a screen, not natural.
Normally, when an object approaches a person, the eyes can respond in two ways. One is that the eyes converge, or rotate inward (a clear example is when one extends his arm and index finger on his nose). At the same time, while the object is approaching, the eyes focus and maintain a clear picture of him as they are changing the ways of the lens, a process called visual accommodation.
But a 3D object flying "off the screen, causes a sensory conflict. The eyes rotate inward to follow, but must also stay focused on the surface of the screen. Thus, they accommodate and converge without a disconnection occurs two natural processes in the course of a long movie, you can end up being stressful.
So far, there is no proven way to prevent this, however there are some tricks that movie-goers who have already spent several hours watching film 'Avatar' recommendations: avoid displaying this is out of focus parts of the scenes, which sounds a lot easier than it really is.

The ministry said 122 cases solved other less serious and sanctioned 13 days in 351 people, said Gu Jian, deputy director of bureau of cybersecurity.
"The Internet gambling have seriously disrupted the social and economic order, and have drawn complaints from people," said Gu.
On 8 February the Chinese government launched a national campaign of seven months to curb illegal gambling on the Internet.
The betting money is prohibited throughout the country, except the administrative region of Macau, the casino mecca, to the many citizens who travel the country to play.

FCC seeks more frequencies for wireless broadband
Federal regulators expect to find more frequencies for wireless broadband services by reallocating some that were used for television signals and other services.
Under the terms of a long-awaited proposal, outlined on Wednesday by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC, for its acronym in English), companies that own television and radio spectrum would surrender voluntarily part of this and would share the profits in government auctions , to give those frequencies to the cellular companies.
Wireless operators have asked for more spectrum in a time when consumers check their email, update their Facebook social network and watch videos from your cell phone. The broadband services are already suffering from a bottleneck in some markets, and options for further strain next generation wireless networks.
"While the potential of mobile broadband is unlimited, it is not their supply of oxygen," said the chairman of the FCC, Julius Genachowski, in a speech to the New America Foundation in Washington. "The spectrum, our frequencies, it really is the oxygen of the mobile broadband service. If there is not enough, mobile broadband will lack the power it needs to thrive."
Finding more wireless spectrum will also be an important part of the FCC plan to bring affordable connections and high speed Internet to all Americans, particularly in rural areas of the country, Genachowski said. That plan, ordered by the economic stimulus initiative last year, come to Congress next month.
Genachowski said the broadband plan would include a proposal to finance wireless networks using the Federal Universal Service Fund, which subsidizes telephone service in poor and rural areas, thanks to a charge on long distance calls.
The FCC plan would set a goal to release 500 megahertz of wireless spectrum in the next decade. This would include the spectrum license issued by companies through government auctions.
It also would offer not subject to license spectrum for all, as the frequencies used for Wi-Fi wireless networks. The wireless industry is currently about 600 megahertz of spectrum available for use subject to license.
Genachowski said that the spectrum used for TV broadcasts is particularly attractive to broadband, because these frequencies have not been used efficiently, but have "potentially worth billions of dollars." The broadcasters have about 300 megahertz of spectrum, but mainly used to meet 10% of U.S. households that still rely only on the open-signal TV.

The mobile phone industries, more powerful than ever
In Barcelona, held last week at Mobile World Congress, the big annual event for mobile phones, and one of the conclusions is that soon will be integrated fixed and mobile communications with devices that connect via WIFI to ADSL home and mobile telephony.
Mobile phones, from not so long ago, have revolutionized our lives. When We already use phone booths or enter into any settlement for a phone call, the students exchange messages through mobile phones, people walking down the street and talking on the phone, and no problem if we are delayed on a date.
It seems that companies involved in mobile phone business to know the word "crisis". They move in the world 620,000 million dollars a year, 57% of the telecoms market in this sector. And innovation is constant.
In Barcelona, they just held the Mobile World Congress: more than 50,000 professionals from 180 countries, 1,300 exhibitors and hotel occupancy rates of almost 95% in Barcelona. What will be next, and therefore more innovative products to enter this market?.
For example, devices with the format of the iPad, the latest venture of Apple, with screens from 4 to 9 inches, including e-books are connected to WiFi and third generation mobile telephony.
Within the new generation of SIM cards, the star appears as the SIM with integrated WiFi, which will facilitate Internet access in mobility of the PC, no problem of compatibility of the systems need not install software from the USB modem as so far.
The new SIM, as well as WiFi, have the capacity to process programs and applications, and improvements in connectivity with the introduction of NFC or contact, which can convert mobile credit cards secure. The new cards will have a web server in the card to facilitate, for example, secure banking transactions. They also increase its capacity, until now limited to 128 kilobytes to several megabytes.
In addition, the 24 top players in the world and several manufacturers have agreed to create a common store for mobile applications. It is not just a store, but its purpose is to develop a common standard applications so that these serve to all operating systems.
Thus, there will be a standard application for all operating systems. The new standard, which can be ready in 12 months, born of the convergence of OMTP Bondi, which is Telefonica, and JIL LVO, which is Vodafone, and the store may be open in 18 months, according to Carlos Melendez, director of Telefónica terminal.
The new software from Bill Gates
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, presented the new version of the operating system for mobile phones from this manufacturer, the Windows Phone 7 Series. With the new system, Microsoft will for the first time to mobile phone virtual platform Xbox Live and Zune entertainment experience.
Furthermore, the leading mobile operating system to Microsoft, "Windows Phone", will integrate a button through which the user has direct access to Bing, the form of Microsoft. 7 incorporates the Windows Phone Windows Phone Hubs showing Web content, applications and services on a single screen.
Other distinctive innovation was the one who exposed the Korean multinational LG, with its project to extend mobile phone use to all audiences. So it made a small mobile operating system itself and allows Internet surfing at speeds up to 7.2 megabits per second and adjust prices. LG Electronic is the Mini, which considers the phone company's smallest and thinnest touchscreen market with a 3.2 inch screen.
Guest star
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt reassured about the controversy with China, publishers of books and Internet operators. Furthermore, co-founder and CEO of Apple, which was in Barcelona, was the winner of the personality of the year of the mobile phone industry that the media vote.
And if that was enough, there was also a guest star on the Mobile World Congress, Queen Rania of Jordan, who, through mobile phones, wants to extend the distance learning (e-learning) to the 72 million children in the world who can not attend school and can not read or write.
"In the recent disaster that has lived Haiti, mobile phones and the speed with which information travels in the messages have allowed the rescue of survivors and have provided many donations," said Rania of Jordan. According to her, the rulers have to psych up for the "urgency" that children can "enjoy a fundamental right like education." "We have the money, but need to make decisions in this regard," said the Queen.
Queen Rania said children in countries at war do not go to school for "fear" and called terminal companies cheaper for poor countries.

Intel faced cyber attack while Google
Intel Corp. has revealed that White was a "sophisticated" cyber attack this year while a surveillance against Google Inc.
Intel revealed the attack in a report presented Monday night against the regulators. This does not necessarily mean that Intel has been infiltrated or the attackers were the same as those of Google.
Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said Tuesday that the attack on Intel was not as wide as that hit Google. He added that Intel has not noticed that some information has been stolen protected by intellectual property laws.
Intel, like other major corporations, facing constant attacks on their networks. Mulloy said the company was just pointing out that there was some connection in terms of the period in which attacks occurred Google as part of a report with information to investors about the risks of the company.
The revelation comes along with increased fears that there is a state-supported espionage and sent to corporate computer networks. Google disclosed last month that its network was attacked from China and that the intruders stole proprietary information.
After that attack, Google warned that it could leave China.
Google said that at least 20 other companies came under attack, but those companies were not identified. Software makers Adobe Systems Inc. and Rackspace Inc., a service of "web hosting" (Internet hosting services), have acknowledged that they were attacked.
Intel is the world's largest manufacturer of microprocessors, the brains of personal computers and servers, with almost 80% of global market control of these chips.

Soon it will be possible to use cell phones to make bank deposits
In the near future, it would be necessary to go to a bank or an ATM to deposit a check. The user only needs to take a couple of pictures of it with his cell phone.
The software to do that are already available for the Apple iPhone and other devices from USAA, a company that provides insurance and banking services, primarily for veterans. Chase, Bank of America and Citibank are among the financial groups plan to release similar software applications this year.
Although the technology, called remote deposit capture, promises to save time for consumers, has become an additional concern about fraud and possible interference with the privacy of financial data.
But banks and high-tech companies to help them claim to have dispelled those concerns. And with the new parameters of federal regulators, more banks could begin to put this technology in the hands of consumers.
"Our consumers are becoming more and more knowledge about the technology," said Marylou Dowd, vice president of mobile banking division of Citibank. "We try to support those people on the move.
The service will work like this: When someone takes a picture of a check, the computer receiving the image will detect the amount, check number and digits from the bottom, comparing these data with information that is on the user's account and the bank. A photograph of the back of the check will verify that it has been signed by the client.
A central banking institution shall then forward funds to the account holder's address. This will also prevent the same check deposited multiple times.
Remote deposit capture began as a way for large corporations and financial institutions large numbers of checks processed without having to send them from one extreme to another country.
The regulators were surprised when the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 caused delays in financial transactions. Since air traffic was suspended for several days, checking packages that banks and other businesses needed to move could not be reviewed.
Thus, in 2003, Congress passed a law known as Check 21. Allows anyone who receives a check take a digital picture of it instead of having to physically delivered. The law has led many companies to install "scanners" that simultaneously digitize thousands of checks for deposit.

Beijing returns to allow individual registration of websites, but with restrictions
The Chinese government backtracked and returned to enable registration of Internet domains themselves (. Cn, China's identity) to individuals, but agreed to submit applications to more restrictions.
According to the official newspaper today released "Global Times", the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology again recognizes individuals as qualified operators of sites, "only three months to prevent a law limiting companies records and businesses.
However, to achieve government approval, individuals must present identity documents and pass a personal interview with the authorities.
The Information Center of China Internet Network (CNNIC, by its initials in English), the Chinese regulator of this sector, legislation enacted in December to deny the individual the right to have your own domain, after a controversy over the abundance of pornographic sites and contacts with Chinese rule.
The newspaper Southern Metropolis ", based in Canton, considered the measure hit a million people and forced the closure of 100,000 web pages.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported that the new registration proposal is a step backwards for freedom of the network in China.
"The name of fighting pornography does not hold. The aim is to tighten political control and cause users to censor themselves face to face with his critics. What surfer would dare criticize the regime after meeting with the person who can put behind bars for a word wrong? "lamented the association in a statement.
China has the largest number of Internet users in the world, some 384 million, but also the country with the most sophisticated censorship in the network to remove content that upset the communist regime.

Spies and hackers exploit a virtual world without rules
The best weapon against online thieves, spies and vandals who threaten global enterprises and security would be an international regulation of cyberspace.
Fortunately for them, such cooperation does not yet exist.
Better yet, from the perspective of a hacker, that goal is not a priority for the international community, despite protests by piracy, censorship and cyberspace disputes that star in China and Iran against the U.S. company Google .

The policy statements of governments around the world are dominated by the need to increase the national cyber defenses. As a result, cybercriminals are benefiting too.
"Countries are in denial," said the Indian cyber law expert Pavan Duggal told Reuters, noting that national legislation had limited use in protecting users of a tool of communication without borders.
"Maybe a clash of great consequence to wake people from their complacency, something equivalent to 11 September in cyberspace," he said, referring to the coordinated attacks in the United States in 2001.
With a quarter of humanity connected to the Internet, cybercrime is a growing danger for the world economy.
The FBI determined that the losses due to Internet crime in the U.S. totaled $ 264 million in 2008, compared with $ 18 million loss for the same reason in 2001: That's probably only a fraction of the losses caused to businesses and government departments.
The threat extends to many sectors, including the control systems of factories, utilities and oil refining, since many of them are linked to the Internet for convenience and productivity.
A priority for regulators is to find ways to track down criminals across borders and will not go unpunished for their crimes, a difficult task when criminals can use proxy servers to remain anonymous.
"We can not postpone the debate until we are in the midst of a catastrophic cyber attack," said former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff U.S. at the conference.
"We must formulate an international strategy and respond to cyber attacks that parallel the traditional laws governing land, sea and air," he added.
Security experts say the ability to conduct cyber attacks massive disaster is the preserve of some governments, beyond the ability of extremist groups like Al Qaeda fighters.
But you can not assume that international networks of organized crime, who have long practiced the massive online fraud and theft, are not developing an interest in getting this skill.
"Cybercrime is a very sophisticated offense with a sophisticated actors and multinational efforts are needed to ensure that they can enforce the law," said chairman Peter Altabef Dell Services, told Reuters.
James Stikeleather, Dell Chief Technology Services, told Reuters that track criminals across borders could pose legal problems for the drafters of multilateral regulation.
Giving an example, said more firms added technology needed to enable researchers attribute a crime, privacy and anonymity of users is reduced.
"Probably the sticking point of governments will be 'Where is the appropriate level of charges against the anonymity or privacy for what people are doing (online)'" he said.
Datuk Mohamed Noor Amin, chairman of the International Partnership against cyber threats, affiliated to the UN, said the failure to regulate could perpetuate the "failed states" cyber.
He cited the poor countries where customers can purchase unregistered SIM cards with wireless Internet capability, enabling them to commit online crimes such as identity theft people in rich countries without fear of being tracked.
He noted that it is in the interest of rich countries help the poorest developing the ability to track this type of crime because its citizens are the target.
"Governments tend to see only their own interests. But really work is its own interest," he said.
"People think the internet is an integral part of each country. They do not focus on cyber security and is playing with fire," he added.
Fortunately for them, such cooperation does not yet exist.

UN warns on electronic waste in developing countries
Sales of household electronic appliances will greatly increase over the next decade in developing countries, causing an environmental disaster if not created new strategies to process as many televisions, phones and computers waste, a report said Monday Nations United.
The environmental and health risks presented by the increasing amount of electronic waste worldwide are especially urgent in developing countries, since some receive waste from rich nations, said the study from the UN Environment Program (UNEP English ).
The wastes are accumulating around the planet at a rate of 36 million tonnes per year, said the report, which clarified that the available data are not sufficient.
U.S. produces 3.3 million tons of electronic waste per year and it is China with 2.3 million tonnes, he said.
The program's executive director Achim Steiner said the world was not prepared for the explosion in consumer electronics that happened in the last decade.
"The world now faces a massive wave of electronic waste and we will strike again, particularly the least developed countries, which could become a dump," Steiner told The Associated Press before the executive session of the UNEP in Bali.
Some Americans and Europeans, he said, African countries have sent falsely declared broken computers as donations. The computer ended up being discarded near slums and became a danger to the health of residents, he said.
The report predicted that by 2020 the number of discarded old computers that China will quadruple over 2007. In India, old refrigerators, which contain dangerous gases could triple by that date.
The biggest growth in recent years has been phones and similar devices, he added.

Do not throw your old phone, recycle it!
A new UN report indicates that discarded electronic equipment such as computers and mobile phones represent a major threat to the environment and public health.
The report, compiled by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) calls for the formulation of new regulations to ensure that electronic waste is recycled in a conscientious manner.
The call coincides with the meeting on Monday the board of UNEP in Bali, Indonesia.
The booming electronics industry has had negative implications, especially in developing countries, where efforts to recycle phones, computers and televisions do not meet the large sales volumes.
The UN environmental agency estimates that electronic waste, or trash-e, is growing at a rate of 40 million tonnes a year.
Mountains of garbage and
In countries like India and China is estimated that only waste generated by discarded computers 500% increase over the next decade.
Electronic devices contain metals and some potentially toxic elements, so recycling is complicated.
But in many countries, including China, these wastes are incinerated in landfills, emitting poisonous gases into the atmosphere.
Mexico and Brazil are also among the countries facing growing mountains of electronic scrap.
UN warns that without immediate action to ensure the collection and safe disposal of these wastes, many countries will be flooded with electronic waste that will have serious consequences for public health.
The report calls for establishing formal processes for handling regulated garbage and recycling-e.
UNEP recognizes that this program would be expensive to introduce, but, ultimately, generate employment, recover precious metals like gold and silver contained in electronic and contribute to a clean and healthy environment.

wirap between mobile and computer
The wireless carriers want to convince consumers that not enough to have a laptop and a cell phone is also needed an engine: if the computer "tablet" without a keyboard.
The most famous is the new Apple iPad, which launches next month. But other manufacturers also seek to exploit the segment and, in fact, planned to do even before Steve Jobs unveiled his new machine in January.
Some companies are creating computer "tablet" without a keyboard similar to the iPad. Others point to small laptops known as "SmartBooks" that sell for a few hundred dollars.
Hewlett-Packard introduced its first smartbook this week at the Cellular World Congress in Barcelona. At first glance, the Compaq Airlife 100 looks like a small laptop, but inside it works quite differently.
A large variation is that the Airlife not use the Windows operating system, but the Android mobile phone created by Google, which is distributed for free. Instead of using a word processor or Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices, Qualcomm uses one from the world of cellphones.
The unit functions in part as a cell phone: ready for use when you open the cover and receive emails when closed. It can be used for 12 hours without recharging because the Qualcomm chip uses less energy than a computer, HP says.
Another similarity with mobile phones is that those who sell these devices are mobile phone companies. Spain's Telefonica will sell the Airlife in Europe and Latin America since the second quarter of this year.
The phone will sell because they bring SmartBooks modems to connect to Internet through cellular networks. This means you will be offered through monthly subscription plans and operators subsidize the purchase prices of the apparatus, to let him perhaps 200 to $ 400.
HP's competitor Lenovo announced a device very similar to Airlife, which will be distributed in the U.S. by AT & T.
Dell uses the same technology that HP tablet with a touch screen that is slightly larger than an iPhone and will be launched this year in the U.S..

New virus breaches 75,000 computers around the world
A new type of computer virus breached some 75,000 computers in 2,500 organizations worldwide, including user accounts from popular social networks, according to internet security firm NetWitness.
The latest virus - known as "botnet Kneber - collects data from access to online financial systems, social networking sites and email systems from infected computers and transferring information to hackers, NetWitness said in a statement. A botnet is an army of infected computers that hackers can control from one central machine.
The company said that the attack was first discovered in January during a routine operation NetWitness software.
Additional investigations firm based in Herndon, USA, revealed that many commercial and governmental systems were affected, including 68,000 corporate connection credentials and access to electronic mail systems, e-banking sites, Yahoo, Hotmail and social networks like Facebook . "The conventional protection against malware and intrusion detection systems are signature-based, by definition, inadequate to meet or Kneber most advanced threats," he said in a statement the company's CEO, Amit Yoran.

Yahoo-Microsoft partnership starts in online ads
Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. have received authorization from regulators in Washington and Europe to proceed with a partnership in search tools that aims to compete with Google Inc.
The companies announced on Thursday that the association has been approved without restrictions by the Department of Justice and the European Commission. Within the 10-year agreement, the form of Microsoft Bing process search requests and direct them related ads on Yahoo. Yahoo has the right to receive 88% of the revenues generated from ads placed alongside search results on their sites.
The companies said they will begin implementing the agreement in coming days to change the Yahoo search platform from Microsoft. They hope to move most of its advertisers and publishers before the 2010 holiday season, but could wait until 2011 if needed and expect to complete the process by early 2012.
This agreement comes just after the Justice Department said in 2008 that it would object Yahoo plan to team up with Google in search. That refusal led to Yahoo turning to Microsoft, which had once offered to buy Yahoo in its entirety.
A statement from the European Commission said that the Yahoo-Microsoft partnership "would not significantly impede effective competition".

Google give two million dollars to the founding of Wikipedia
The Wikipedia foundation, which manages the online collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia, said he had received from Google a donation of $ 2 million that will fund its current operations and invest in its infrastructure.
This represents a quarter of the $ 8 million he got Wikimedia between November and January, thanks to the fundraising campaign more lucrative than the foundation has organized so far, to cover a budget of about $ 9.4 million 2009-2010.
"Wikipedia is one of the great triumphs of the internet", justified a co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin was quoted by a statement from Wikimedia. "This vast repository of information generated by the community of Internet users is an invaluable resource for everyone," he said.
Nonprofit organization based in San Francisco (west coast U.S.), Wikimedia operates with only 35 employees when their sites receive over 364 million unique visitors per month, allowing you to claim the title of fifth website more visited the world.

U.S. companies and agencies affected by computer virus
Security experts have discovered a network of 74,000 computers infected with a virus that stole internal information from companies and government agencies.
The unusual fact about what happened is that infiltrated the computer network was uncovered. The incident demonstrates the dangers of keeping important data computers connected to an open Internet.
More than 2,400 organizations, including financial institutions and energy companies, as well as federal agencies have been infiltrated by the virus, according to security firm that discovered NetWitness Corp..
NetWitness not name the companies or agencies whose computers were exposed. The Wall Street Journal newspaper said the companies affected include Merck & Co., Cardinal Health Inc., Paramount Pictures and Juniper Networks Inc.
Merck said in a statement Thursday that a computer company had been infiltrated by the virus but did not steal crucial information. The other three companies did not return calls from The Associated Press.
The victims appear to have been the target of cyber attack, unlike other computer attacks with Google Inc. that forced the popular Internet browser to threaten to withdraw their offices in China. That's an important distinction because it shows how the secrets on the Internet may fall into wrong hands even when the criminals do not specifically seek them.
"These problems are out there and are ubiquitous," said Amit Yoran, president of NetWitness and former manager of cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security.
Parts of the virus detected by the firm are likely active. He said the network appears to come from computers in Eastern Europe and China but it is not clear whether the attackers are found there.

Buzz group accuses Google of privacy violations in the U.S.
An advocacy group for privacy on Tuesday posted a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against the new Buzz socialization service from Google with the argument that violates federal law to protect consumers.
The Center for the Electronic Privacy Information (EPIC by its initials in English) filed the complaint just days after Google Inc. amended the service to halt the growing expressions of concern about privacy.
Since the company launched the Buzz Google last week as part of the email service Gmail, Google has been criticized because it had created automatically public circles of friends to users based on more frequent contact them by Gmail.
At the weekend, Google changed the service only to suggest contacts to social networks of its users.
Despite the changes, said EPIC privacy infringements persist because Google automatically enroll users in the Gmail Buzz, instead of waiting for them to do, or "opt" for the service.
For now Google has given users the option to disconnect from the new service. Their recent changes also provide the users create a profile before your information is made public.
However, EPIC claims that the Federal Trade Commission requesting Google to become the Buzz into a service that is only option for the user.
The committee also seeks to prevent the company to use the Gmail contact book to compile lists of social networks.
"This is a serious infringement of privacy expectations of consumers," he said in a statement EPIC executive director Marc Rotenberg.
"Google should not allow that promotes the personal information of users in a social network if they have never asked for," he said.
In response to the EPIC complaint, Google said it has undertaken some changes to the Buzz in accordance with user feedback and has "more improved functions.
"We hope to hear more suggestions and continue to improve the experience of Buzz transparent to users and check that the service does not interfere with them," the company said.

Linux sum followers to face Apple in mobile
The U.S. software firm Adobe and three other companies joined the LiMo wireless group, underscoring the growing role of Linux operating system in mobile phones.
The market for software platforms is led by Nokia's Symbian operating system, but has lost much ground in the last year before Apple and Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.
That's why Nokia, the largest manufacturer of mobile devices, will merge its Linux Maemo software platform used in its flagship phone N900 with the Intel's Moblin, which is also based on open source software of Linux.
The Linux operating system is starting to gain momentum, as Google has used it to build its Android platform.
"There has been a change of pace for Linux on mobile," said Morgan Gillis, LiMo's director, in an interview.
"No other operating system today even coverage of Linux sales, is appearing in almost every commercial prime vendors of mobile devices, from the largest to the smallest," he said in an interview.
LiMo, a non-profit, expects to benefit from its focus on giving a greater voice on the development of software to telecom operators.
The role of the main players in the platform is a key attraction for adoble, whose Flash software is web-based largest, with an estimated 1.6 million developers.
Vodafone and other operators have committed to having a smaller number of operating systems that support them is already a costly exercise.
However, the large number of operating systems has grown in recent years with new players like Apple and Google entering the mobile market.
In the latest twist, Samsung Electronics, the second largest handset makers and one of the key members of LiMo, introduced in late 2009 its own platform for cellphones.
Linux is the most popular free software or open source, users can use, revise and share.
Linux providers earn money selling improvements and technical services and Linux competes directly with Microsoft, which charges for its Windows software and opposes to share their code for free.
The Japanese electronics firm NEC and Panasonic, and the Israeli Else presented Monday a total of seven new phones that work with the LiMo software.

Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson yesterday unveiled their new smartphone models, with the hope of improving their position in the lucrative mobile phone market. Samsung, second-largest maker of portable devices, unveiled its Wave smartphone model, which uses a new touch screen technology and is the first operating system that uses bada. "Samsung's commitment to Bada is emphasized by the fact that you are using to enhance its flagship product for the show but will be difficult to convince the developer community," said Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight. Earlier this month, Samsung unveiled a plan to triple its sales of smartphones in 2010 and producing its own software platform bada.
However, analysts have been skeptical that Samsung's efforts to manufacture a new platform open late. With limited volume, phones that developers will use bada hardly attractive or supported by the operators.
Samsung said it plans to launch five to seven models of phones using the software bada during 2010.
Samsung and Sony Ericsson have been consumers in search of Web functions and other type of personal computers, leading them to prefer computer-like smart phones as the major vendors Nokia, Apple and Research In Motion.
The market share of smartphones from Samsung was only 3.3 percent last year, compared with nearly 20 percent stake in mobile in general.
Sony Ericsson's participation in the smartphone market is even lower. JK Shin, president of Samsung's mobile operations, told Reuters in an interview that with the help of bada-which can also be used in cheaper models, the company would benefit from the growing demand for new smart phones in emerging markets.
"I think the smart phone market will grow 20 percent annually over a period of three years, and the rate of growth in emerging markets is much greater than in developed countries," he said.
Sony Ericsson, the fourth-largest maker of handsets, unveiled three models of smart phones using the Google Android operating system in two, and Nokia's Symbian in another.
The company reported its seventh straight quarter of losses.

Mobile operators have joint programs
The world's largest wireless operators said Monday they will combine forces to enable software vendors to design applications that are used in the largest number of phones.
The "Community of wholesale application is an attempt to achieve the initiative with cell phone makers like Apple Inc., Nokia Corp. and Research In Motion Ltd., which have their own stores of programs. Google Inc. is also building a meaningful point of sales software for Android.
The 24 community wireless operators, announced in Barcelona during the Annual Congress of Mobile Telephony, will let software makers to design applications that can be used in phones from different manufacturers.
A software developer will be able to create an application and sell it through retail outlets of different wireless operators.
Mobile programs represent an increasingly larger but manufacturers face the problem that their products can be used only in a few phones. For example, an application for the Apple iPhone can not be used in other phones.
While many manufacturers like the new idea, it is difficult to implement. Also face the problem of ensuring that their software work on phones with different capacities, different keyboard and screen sizes.
The "Community of applications wholesale" to the top two platforms will use existing standard and hope to develop one within a year.
Americans Verizon Wireless, AT & T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA are part of the group, which also includes the Japanese NTT DoCoMo, Mexico's America Movil, Vodafone Group PLC in English and Chinese China Mobile. The group will serve to 3.000 million users.
The handset makers Samsung Electronics Co and Sony Ericsson also supports the group. None sells applications by itself.

High Definition Mobile reaches 5 European countries
The French telecommunications operator Orange announced the extension this year to the UK, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Spain service high definition (HD) for phones, which offers better sound quality, after he has experienced since last September in Moldova.
Orange, which was scheduled to pilot the deployment of high definition for its cellular subscribers in the United Kingdom for three months this spring and then in Belgium, said in a statement it has decided to take another step with three additional countries in 2010.
The French company gave no further details on the dates in each country for the presentation of the initiative the day before the start of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, said it will expand "quickly" the range of handsets compatible with HD voice across Europe and that prices will be communicated at the time of its release.
In any event, stressed that with this new technology users will have "the best sound quality possible with a richer, more natural sound, better adapted to convey the emotions that a regular phone.
Orange, the commercial brand of France Telecom, said that in September last year was the first operator worldwide that sold cellular voice services for HD in Moldova, which was also the first to offer HD combined with internet calls (IP).
HD For fixed IP telephony deployed initially in France, plans to implement it "quickly" in Poland and Spain.
In regard to high definition for cellular technology used WB-AMR (Wideband Adaptive Multirate) to cover a spectrum between 50 and 7,000 hertz, rather than the current standard coverage 300-3.400 Hz.
Orange hopes that voice services continue to generate the bulk of the revenues of telecom operators in the world in the coming years, 69% in the horizon of 2014, with a minimum of 60% in each region.
The main threat to this economic model would be a rapid development of IP phones in the image of what is happening in fixed telephony.

The electronic book publishing increased by 35% in 2009
The Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, has ensured that the publication of books in electronic form in Spain increased by 35% in 2009, the year in which 375 million books published in traditional format, "more than a million a day including holidays.
Gonzalez-Sinde answered well in the full Congress to question the deputy Torres Mora, a Socialist Group in relation to the situation in the book sector in the context of current economic crisis.
According to the charge of Culture, "the book does, is an industry that stands between the sectors of our economy that have absorbed the best toughest stretch of the global crisis" and said he also excels in this sector "activating growth."
He emphasized the "ambition innovative" sector, as evidence, "he said in 2009 increased by 35% of the electronic book publishing, and stated that among the indicators that make it can afford" optimistic "the future of the book is the "vitality" of its production rate.
Thus, said the past year, "in full global recession," a new book was published in Spain every 6 minutes, "surpassing all expectations", which provides a result of publication of 375 million, "more than one million a day. "
It showed the "commercial strength" of the sector, and noted that, although there was a "slight decrease" in the export of booklets, Spain exports remained above the global figure, which fell 13, 6 average.
"In our country the number is closer to 342 million euros," said the minister, who said that this factor has "once again, a positive balance," and was convinced that Spain will continue in the coming years fourth power of the publishing world.
He said that although it is still early to count the exact number of sales counter in Spanish bookstores, "taking prudent to provisional data of the sector, rising between 5% and 8%," and added that the set of internal trade expectations "are identical" to those of 2008.
In addition, he alluded to a "key indicator" civic and economically, as is the habit of reading, and said "has never read so much as now in this country, we once again outperformed our read rates.

Virtualization also reach the iPad
With a global turnover to reach 11,700 million dollars in 2011, virtualization services support mobility as a vital element for companies in this century. Hence part an initiative that responds to the question of whether the gadgets will fit into the business environment.
Citrix has announced via his blog that, virtually, be possible to run Windows 7 on the iPad, using a more evolved version of the virtual download specialized software applications and tools for mobile devices like the iPhone. Known at the corporate level as Receiver.
This is not part of an event, on the contrary is a trend that has grown increasingly around the planet thanks to advances in virtualization. According to a study by consultancy IDC, at the end of this year's 17 percent of server virtualization solutions used.
Therefore, with the disposal of the iPad, Citrix has promised to have the software available to run virtualized environments in which we can have all the necessary tools, running in real time but virtually. As commented on Citrix's vice president, Chris Fleck. Windows applications can be executed without modification, and certainly from the datacenter, even when running multiple applications simultaneously, says the company's blog.
Moreover, according to Fleck's words, the device with 9.7 inch screen becomes the perfect platform to run multiple applications simultaneously and optimally. Because thanks to the larger screen, solve the inconveniences of using virtualization in the iPhone, which just require travel and work in awkward zooms.
This is just an example of where virtualization allows a permanent connection to information. From a mobile phone to read the email, obtain and review documents and even video conferencing. Mobile employees can access their desktops, documents and systems from any physical location, doing exactly the same as if they were in the office.
The software needs to be run on servers or XenApp and XenDesktop solutions according to the company, the virtualization software has worked well with the iPad development platform for companies using this or XenApp XenDesktop can be used from the start iPad environments work concludes Citrix.
Thus, it is clear that mobility is critical importance in converging technologies. Its advantages for business productivity will become increasingly evident. Besides the new remote workforce, will make people feel more comfortable with their work, they want to remain stable in your company will have less stress and improve the balance between work and private life.

Astronaut aboard the ISS postea new photos on Twitter
The peak of Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, United States, Rome and the city of Palermo, Italy, and even the moon are among the landscape affected on Twitter by astronaut Soichi Noguchi.
Aboard the International Space Station, Noguchi became in recent days in an Internet celebrity that comes with taking pictures as it passes the Earth's orbit. Only on Saturday won 6 thousand new fans, reaching over 63 thousand. Since last Thursday that were 11 thousand.
He also comments on the routine space station (busy day, cleaning and reshaping of equipamipo energy ") and the expectation for the arrival of the ship Endeavor, which blasted off Monday for new mission. "Endeavor way!" He greeted morning. The arrival at the station is scheduled for Wednesday.

France joins the race to digitize books
In the midst of the flat and wide in central France, a team of secretaries and computer orders the European literary heritage for the digital age.
Simply put, they live to turn the pages.
The company they work for, Safig, is one of the few European companies that are scanning books, using automatic page turners and human.
That places them in the center of France's plan for a huge virtual library, and their attempts to negotiate a digital book with U.S. Internet giant, Google.
"We are going through a politically sensitive period," said project leader Christophe Danna.
"Whatever the outcome, will determine the future of the literary market," he said, standing against a background of quiet scanners and robotic arms that turn over pages.
French fans plan of 1.000 million for libraries and museums digitize their view it as a union of cultural pride and industry strategy. Bruno Racine, director of the National Library of France, is also a strategic advisor to the NATO military alliance.
Skeptics point out that the 10 million books digitized by Google French make any effort seem small, like the three-year contract Safig to scan 300,000 books for the National Library.
One possible outcome is a mutual agreement with Google to accelerate the mass digitization.
"This is a bit like a factory. We do not produce cars, but there is a strong parallel," said Danna.
Safig charged per page, regardless of whether you are scanning a classic romanticon or "Belgian Code on Professional Unions", a yellowish volume waiting to be scanned here.
Some analysts see a second parallel: As in the automotive industry, France has been accused of protectionism and belligerence toward foreign firms while redefining its editorial market of 4,000 million euros.
"Faustian pact"
President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged that France will not allow you "remove" its literary treasures. Intellectuals have criticized a library, in Lyon, by signing a "Faustian bargain" to digitize books by Google.
Many French people feel that the works of Moliere and Baudelaire's poems are a national treasure more important than the automotive industry, and that the State is right to give them special attention.
Robert Darnton, director of the Library of Harvard University, he even wants the U.S. can take to France as a model.
"The technology exists and perhaps the money really there to recreate the Republic of Letters" he told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Paris.
"The state should support the cost of digitization of what they call the 'heritage', our stake that belongs to the whole nation," he said.
France has said it is ready to talk with Google on a joint agreement, but wants to receive more generous benefits that other partners, for example, through a free exchange of books.
This position is a change of attitude after the departure of Jean-Noel Jeanneney as director of the National Library of France in 2007. Jeanneney was a fierce critic of Google and even wrote a book attacking the literary project of the company as a threat to non-Anglophone culture.
Under the agreement, the National Library could allow Google to use the digitized books and have free access in exchange for much larger collection of search giant.
"We welcome the spirit of the proposal," said Simon Morrison, a spokesman for Google. "We are pleased about," he said.
The issue has gained urgency because of the interest in digitizing that exploded last year.
While electronic readers gain popularity, the books look set to become the next sector captured by the online revolution, following the music and film.
The technology research company Forrester estimates that sales of electronic books in the United States reached 3 million units in 2009, and expects that figure to double to more than 6 million in 2010.
Some fear it could end with the printed word and all its charms, while others relish the idea of discovering gems sold on their screens, to delve into the "Magna Carta" of Britain or the first editions of Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.
"One touch this book"
In a not minor, the online literary bid was helped by Google Books, displaying snippets of books under copyright and full texts of works free of duty.
"It is thanks to Google we exist," he told Reuters Jill Cousins, Executive Director of Europeana polyglot culture site (www.europeana.eu). "They gave great service to Europe to make politicians aware of the shortage of European culture online," he said.
Europeana, funded by the European Commission will want to partner with retailers virtual so that readers can easily pay for works under copyright.
In the laboratory Safig rural scanning, the hope is that any agreement between the public and private sector creates jobs for smaller firms.

University laboratory is determined to combat theft on the Internet
Stealing money has never been easier thanks to the Internet, researchers believe a university laboratory in the U.S. state of Florida, dedicated to designing programs to curb cyber crimes and make safer the Net
Launched three years ago, the Research Laboratory of Electronic Crimes of the Florida State University, aims to create technology to combat crimes such as theft of personal data, which lead to theft of money from credit cards and bank accounts.
According to the researchers, these crimes continue to grow by giving internet facilities to act at a distance and without a trace.
"With an internet connection anyone can operate from anywhere on the planet, without using his own name, no address, no nothing," said Sudhir Aggarwal, director of the center, known as 'E-Crime Lab'. "Against the electronic crimes are no rules, Internet is the Wild West ... We try to develop software tools that could help security agencies to investigate, "he said.
The laboratory has developed two different software systems to identify criminals who act hidden behind the screen of the global network, and tries to develop a mechanism far more effective than spam filters to protect against these crimes internet.
"These are not the crimes of the future are the crimes of this, unfortunately," said the expert. "I think the electronic crimes continue to grow until we find at least one way to mitigate Internet and a system that can stop them," said Aggarwal.
One program that the university laboratory called 'Without Mask' (Unmask), identifying the premises from where it left an e-mail for illegal deceptive (phishing email).
A test for PhD students, working with that project, allowing to trace an email for purposes of deception and find its origins in Guatemala City, said Aggarwal.
Other software created is a bankruptcy-passwords ( 'Password Breaker') would allow, in an investigation, police and security agencies, and in some cases, corporations have access to protected information.
The system functions as a kind of guessed passwords and has a high degree of effectiveness "because people do not really create good passwords, especially because he can not remember," Aggarwal told.
The 'E-Crime Lab', which began work in January 2007 and is on average seven students per year concentrated on development projects, receives research funding from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and collaborates with the Department of Justice of Florida and the U.S. Center White Collar Crimes (NWCCC).
The computer security company Sophos said this week in the last year there was an increase "alarming" theft of personal information through social networks like Twitter or Facebook. "Users spend more time on social networks to share valuable and important information, and hackers smell where they will make money," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

Google and Government Partner to fight cyberattacks
Google is finalizing a deal that will allow the National Security Agency United States to help investigate the attack of corporate espionage that could have come from China, said Thursday the Washington Post.
The aim of the research is to better respond to Google, the largest Internet search firm in the world, and its users from future attacks, the Post said, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the agreement.
The sources said that Google's alliance with the NSA electronic surveillance organization more powerful in the world, would aim to allow both parties to share key information without violating Google's policies or laws that protect the privacy of internet communications .
Under the agreement, the NSA will not see the user searches or e-mail accounts, sources said. Google does not share ownership data with the NSA, said.
Google took on January 12 the unusual step of announcing that he was the victim of sophisticated cyber attacks in mid-December and is reviewing its business operation in China.
The company based in Silicon Valley said the cyberattacks directed against activists Gmail accounts of human rights defenders Chinese and a research fund of at least 20 other large companies had been targeted.China responded several days later with a defense of state control over the Internet. A senior official said internet pornography, fraud, and rumors were a threat and the means of the internet should help "guide public opinion" in China.
The U.S. director of national intelligence, Dennis Blair said Tuesday that the cyberattacks against Google were a warning. The partnership between the giant Internet search and the NSA touches sensitive issues about how to balance individual privacy and national security online.
Google went to the NSA as a result of the attacks, but achieving agreement took weeks because of the sensitive nature of the exchange of information between both parties.
The focus of the cooperative society will not be in determining who was behind the attacks, the Post said citing sources. That would be almost impossible.
Instead, the goal is to build a better defense of the networks of Google, or what experts call "information security", according to the Post quoted its sources.

The Symbian operating system migrates to open source
The Symbian Foundation, creator of the operating system for smart phones used the world over, is giving away codes worth "billions of dollars."
Thus, the firm complies with the announcement made in 2008, when he said the system would open-source mode (in English, "open source").
This means that any organization or individual can now use and modify the operating system source code for any purpose.
The Foundation believes that this would attract new programmers to work on the system and accelerate its progress."It's the biggest migration ever made open source," he told the BBC Lee Williams, of the Symbian Foundation.
The Finnish giant Nokia bought the system in 2008 and supported the foundation Symbian Foundation "nonprofit" to oversee the development and transition to open source.
The foundation expects Nokia to reduce its involvement in the foundation to less than 50% in 2011. The Finnish company will oversee the new developments to maintain the quality of the operating system.
Symbian participate in AT & T, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone.
Ian Fogg, analyst with Forrester, said that it is a Symbian move to "move from a business model to another," and yet "winning position in the mind of the customer."
The move comes after the emergence of Android, the mobile operating system from Google, which is also open source.
But Williams, Symbian, denied that it is a marketing move.
"We had the idea of 12 to 18 months before Android and the iPhone launch," he said, while acknowledging that needs "desperately" to have more positioning.

Tablets: 42-year history
The "tabletcomputers" are a dream pursued by the computer industry does anything less than 42 años.Quien iPad attended the launch last week and saw the set, shiny and full of tricks being proudly paraded before the press by Steve Jobs, could find all "very modern". The truth is that "tabletcomputers" are a dream pursued by the computer industry does nothing less than 42 years. Yes, you read that correctly: nearly half a century.
Learn the history of the tablets
It is easy to understand the fascination with the concept: a tablet represents the marriage of the sophistication of a computer, with its infinite possibilities, with the ease of use of the couple "notebook and pen" with which we are all accustomed. It is a kind of Holy Grail of usability. Keyboards have 106 keys - joystick, and mouse to push rollers on the table "Forget all that: just point and scratching.
But the way to the iPad was tortuous, full of ideas too fantastic, too expensive or simply not interesting enough to be successful among users.
See below some of the ancestors of the new Apple laptop and gives a peek at what the future holds for us.
The beginning of everything: Dynabook
The first engineer who proposed the idea of a tablet computer format was Alan Kay, computer scientist pioneer in areas such as graphical interfaces and object-oriented programming. In 1968, Kay described the Dynabook concept of a "personal computer for children of all ages.
At the time, the specifications of the machine seemed to fiction: the Dynabook should be the size of a notebook, weighing not more than 1.8 kg, have a graphic display capable of displaying at least 4 thousand characters with "print quality" (in alphabets such as Latin and Sanskrit) and contrast similar to printed paper, enough memory for 500 pages of text, audio or several hours. All this at a price not exceeding $ 500.
Until the technology for the Dynabook was developed, Alan Kay and his team worked with machinery they saw as "! Dynabooks Interim", identical in all except size and cost requirements. One of these machines was the "High", Xerox, one of the first computers with graphical interface, which later influenced the development of the Macintosh and, indirectly, of PC's as we know them today.
But the main concept of the Dynabook was not the hardware and software if a series of educational activities in a new programming language named Smalltalk. The idea was revived in the XO-1 (the laptop from U.S. $ 100) OLPC project, which has an interface (named Sugar) focusing on activities, and a programming language, easy to use and suitable for children called "Squeak", derived from Smalltalk.
And while today we have enough technology to create hardware with the characteristics of a Dynabook, Alan Kay believes that his invention does not yet exist for missing a crucial point: the software. The closest is just the XO-1 project in which Alan Kay is actively connected. "Shy" boxed idea
In 1983, Apple hired the firm Frog Design to bring to life the concept of a tablet computer. The prototype was dubbed the "Bashful" (shy), in reference to the Snow White (Snow White), a new visual identity that was being developed for Apple products and that came to market in 1984 with the Apple IIc. Images recently released by Frog Design shows a tablet "square" with a black trim around the screen (again, does it seem familiar?).
The machine would be coupled to a base with keyboard, floppy drive and a system for transport and pen would be used for selecting objects on the screen. The Shy probably never became a "mock-up, a nonfunctional model created to demonstrate the idea. But the "little seed" was planted and the Apple tablet concept revisitaría nine years later.
GRiDPAD: the first in the market
The first "tablet" as is presently known to reach the market was GRiDpad Pen Computer, the U.S. GRiD Systems, a pioneer who was also responsible for the first "laptop" as we know, the GRiD Compass, 1982.
Launched in 1989, the machine weighed just over 2 kg and measuring about 29.2 x 23.6 x 3.7 cm (small back then). The processor was a 386 20 MHz and GRiDPAD had 10-inch screen with VGA resolution capable of displaying 32 shades of gray. The internal modem was GRiDpad, connectors for keyboard and floppy disk drive and PCMCIA card input, that is, everything that a good computer should have the time, but in a format "mobile" powered by batteries with an estimated three hours autonomy . The operational system was a modified version of MS-DOS, with an interface that could be manipulated with a pen.
Tablet PC: a bet of Microsoft
In 2001, Microsoft tried to sign the idea of the "Tablet PC" laptops equipped with touch screens that were running a modified version of Windows XP, ready to operate with pen and some extra utilities and handwriting recognition tools.
The Tablet PC was not a product, but a concept, which joined several manufacturers. But many of the Tablet PC tablets were not "pure" because, in fear that users are not accustomed to using the pen, manufacturers have bet on machines "hybrid" mobile notebook with a screen that could be closed on keyboard turning them into tablets.
Finally, the idea did not go as expected. The tablet PC out much more expensive than similarly equipped notebooks and applications that had not justified the need for touch screen.
The machines never disappeared from the market: new models are launched so far and found a small market in some segments such as medical field, but never loved the public.
With the launch of Windows 7 Microsoft is trying to bring the concept back with the name of "Slate". At the opening of CES 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January this year, Steve Ballmer briefly showed the HP model, fitted with multitouch screen and filming a PC version of the software of the Kindle, the Amazon. The machine hit the market yet.
Origami: if the first time is not right ...
A word that can be used to define Microsoft's "persistence" if an idea in which the company believes is wrong, turns to the table project is refined and relaunched until success is achieved. Examples of this strategy are missing, including Windows, Internet Explorer, Zumba, Xbox, etc..
The "Origami", announced at the beginning of 2006, was an evolution of the idea of tablet PCs, laptops and even more in a smaller format.
They were PC's with low processing power (and low power) equipped with a 7-inch screen (usually sensitive to touch), running Windows XP. Sound familiar? It's a very similar concept with the netbooks, but with an important difference: the price more expensive than a conventional notebook.
Some "Origami" had an unusual design, with a keyboard split into two halves, one on each side of the screen, replacing the small joystick and mouse. Because of limited processors (Intel Celeron, SAW C7, etc.), the operating system was running "heavy". The concept still exists as "Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), but the market presence is minimal.
Nokia 770: a Nokia that does not speak
Think Fast: Say the name of a company known for smartphones that also decided to invest in tablets. Who said Apple was wrong: this company is Nokia.
Launched in 2005, the Nokia 770 "has nothing to do with the motives for which the company is known, despite the name. It is a tablet for Internet access equipped with a 4.1 inch screen and a Linux-based operating system dubbed "Maemo". It was made to surf the web, read e-mail, play music and display pictures and e-Books, and was never marketed massively: in fact, was a kind of laboratory to study the concept, an "investment in the future." "" Mimadito developers of free software, generated three descendants: the Nokia 800, 810 and the brand new N900, the first model that integrates telephony resources, making it a kind of hybrid smartphone tablet. Modbook, the first Mac tablet
The first Mac "tablet" was not produced by Apple. Created by Axiotron Modbook and was, as the name says, a "modification" of PowerBook G4 notebooks.
The company bought the Apple notebooks, dismounted and was gathering the components on a new chassis, removing the keyboard and adding a touch screen (with pen) on the LCD panel.
The Modbook shooting the same operating system (MacOS X) and software for traditional Macs, and the touch screen (with generous 15 inches) was seen by applications as a table digitizer (tablet) as those marketed by Wacom, sensitive at various levels of pen pressure. So the machine became popular among illustrators, who adopted it as an "electronic table.
In 2009, the Axiotron Modbook launched Pro, MacBook Pro based on Intel processors. The cabinet was transformed and became more refined and elegant, with black finish, and the display was hybrid: in addition to the pen, also went by the touch of fingers. The price, however, was rather salty: U.S. $ 5 billion.
XO-3: the future
This is perhaps the machine that most closely approximates the Dynabook concept, originally proposed by Alan Kay. Not only in the concept of software, hardware and ideal for use (education) as well as the fact that there simply because the idea is too advanced for our time.
The goal is to reach the market in 2012 (ie almost two years hence), a "tablet" with half the thickness of the iPhone and a colorful touchscreen 28 × 22 cm that also functions as "e-Paper" to read in sunlight.
Most of the plastic components would be, for greater strength, and even have a connector for a wall charger: recharge energy would be made by induction. Technical details are scarce, but in an article in Forbes magazine of the machine designer mentions an 8 GHz processor (yes, eight gigahertz) with consumption of less than one watt and a camera on the back of the appliance. All this for only $ 75. About 40% of the current price of an XO-1, which was projected to cost only $ 100 but goes for about $ 180.
It seems an impossible dream: there is still no technology to create a machine with these specifications and the price is absurdly aggressive. But technology moves fast, and Nicholas Negroponte seems happy to be content with the role of "visionary" instead of director. "We need not build it," Negroponte said at the Forbes, referring to the computer. "We just need to threaten it."
The idea is that, to inspire the industry and giving an "ideal" to be conquered, someone will accept the challenge and transform the idea into a product. More or less like the ASUS, which inspired the audience's response to Negroponte's idea of a very low cost laptop (the XO-1), created the EeePC 701 and opened the market for netbooks.
