The French telecommunications operator Orange announced the extension this year to the UK, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Spain service high definition (HD) for phones, which offers better sound quality, after he has experienced since last September in Moldova.
Orange, which was scheduled to pilot the deployment of high definition for its cellular subscribers in the United Kingdom for three months this spring and then in Belgium, said in a statement it has decided to take another step with three additional countries in 2010.
The French company gave no further details on the dates in each country for the presentation of the initiative the day before the start of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, said it will expand "quickly" the range of handsets compatible with HD voice across Europe and that prices will be communicated at the time of its release.
In any event, stressed that with this new technology users will have "the best sound quality possible with a richer, more natural sound, better adapted to convey the emotions that a regular phone.
Orange, the commercial brand of France Telecom, said that in September last year was the first operator worldwide that sold cellular voice services for HD in Moldova, which was also the first to offer HD combined with internet calls (IP).
HD For fixed IP telephony deployed initially in France, plans to implement it "quickly" in Poland and Spain.
In regard to high definition for cellular technology used WB-AMR (Wideband Adaptive Multirate) to cover a spectrum between 50 and 7,000 hertz, rather than the current standard coverage 300-3.400 Hz.
Orange hopes that voice services continue to generate the bulk of the revenues of telecom operators in the world in the coming years, 69% in the horizon of 2014, with a minimum of 60% in each region.
The main threat to this economic model would be a rapid development of IP phones in the image of what is happening in fixed telephony.
