About five million customers have downloaded the Skype web application for iPhones that was released on Sunday.
Before launching the application on May 30 for networks of high-speed third generation (3G), Apple iPod customers could use Skype when they had Wi-Fi, wireless Internet network found in cafes, homes and centers commercial.
"We had millions of downloads to date," said Russ Shaw, general manager of Skype for mobile devices. "This is really positive," he added.
A Skype spokesman later said the number of downloads of the application was nearly 5 million on Wednesday.
However, Skype faces a series of complaints from Internet users after Sunday said it would start charging next year for 3G calls between users.
This is seen as a major route change since the firm became known for not charging the Skype to Skype calls to their subscribers, either from their computer or wireless device.
Shaw said the company needs to start charging for the service unless you find the investors they need to ensure that the quality of 3G calls remain high.
The official declined to give specific details on price plans. But said the service will be competitive with traditional rivals, including mobile phones.
