Sony Corp. will take gaming to the big screen next month when submitting a new title for its PlayStation 3 in theaters.
On 5 and 6 October, four theaters in San Francisco and Thousand Oaks, CA Rosemont, Illinois, and Bellevue, Washington, will give the public a chance to play "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" screens equipped with technology Sony digital projection.
These rooms offer viewers PS3 system connected to the Sony 4K digital cinema available in about 500 cinemas in the country and which the company says offers better image resolution than traditional projectors.
"This is the first time we do it in a cinema. We believe it is the beginning of something for us and hopefully we can build this into a standard element in the experience of cinema," he said.
"Our goal of converting to digital cinema goes beyond the traditional experience of watching films and focuses on helping businesses find ways to fill seats," he added.
The first night will be invitation-only private presentations, while the second will be open to the public and will be promoted on radio and on social networks.
The theater chains have struggled to maintain revenue growth as home entertainment systems and the recession have prompted some viewers to stay home.
Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft Corp, which makes the rival Xbox 360, recently cut prices of its machines. Sales of video game hardware and software in the U.S. fell in August by 16 percent to 908.7 million dollars, the sixth monthly decline suffered by the industry, according to research group NPD.
